We forget what they have done. We forget they have stories. We forget they have traversed many of the roads that we find ourselves traveling. They are our elders. Have you thought about the many paths they cleared for us and we are totally unaware? Have you given consideration that many of our elders have stories that we would find hard to believe? Many, especially women, cleared many paths for us who happen to be women. They fought battles that we would find hard to summon the courage to fight. They are our elders.
It seems hard to understand that within America we place so little value on their existence. We forget that at one time they were us. I'm certain many of our elders would whisper to us; ask questions of the elders who are surrounding you at this moment. Take the time they would say to sit and have a conversation. Take the time because they have been there before.
Do yourself a favor this week. If you know of an elder that you believe would enjoy your company and you theirs, then take the time to sit and ask questions about this thing called life. Most of them you will find are quite knowledgeable and I'm certain you will be most surprised at what their wisdom can add to your life. So, take the time. Sit with an elder and simply ask: How did you navigate your life and do you have any pearls of wisdom that you would enjoy sharing.
Until the next time,
Peaceful thoughts,
-Dorothea
