I have been reading "We Are the Builders of Our Fortunes" by Ralph Waldo Emerson. If you get a chance, it's a very good read. Emerson gives much to consider with his simplistic yet profound wisdom. One of the virtues that moves throughout the book is his discussion on our character. Emerson states "Character teaches above our wills. Men imagine that they communicate their virtue or vice only by overt actions, and do not see that virtue or vice emit a breath every moment. The force of character is cumulative." What stands out for me within this statement is the last sentence "the force of character is cumulative."
As we move through our day we forget that our character is speaking loudly as to who we really are. It's those small acts of unkindness or those outburst of misguided temper that reveal our character. Those are the cumulative acts on which Emerson speaks. These small acts give examples as to where we are in our unfolding to the highest sense of ourselves.
With that said, let's reveal our character by each moment and each act that we commit. Let's show ourselves who we are by what we communicate through word and action. Let's show ourselves how far we have come and if there is a stumble, we are eager to state our mistake and resume showing the true nature of our character. Let's have some fun and grow a little more this week.
Until the next time,
Peaceful thoughts,
-Dorothea
